Bio: Senator Tom Harkin was elected to Congress in 1974 from Iowa's Fifth Congressional District. In 1984, after serving 10 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, he was elected to the Senate, where he has served since. He is the first Iowa Democrat to serve four terms in the Senate. Senator Harkin serves on the Health, Labor, Education, and Pensions Committee, where he has played a leading role in passing the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that will improve the lives of millions of American workers. He also serves as the chairman of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education subcommittee.
