Bio: Ann Jones is a journalist, photographer, and the author of eight books of nonfiction, most recently "Kabul in Winter: Life Without Peace in Afghanistan" (Metropolitan, 2006). She often writes for The Nation and www.tomdispatch.com. She spent the last eight years doing humanitarian work in conflict zones—four of them in Afghanistan—and is now working on a book about the impact of war on women worldwide. An authority on violence against women, she serves as a gender advisor to the U.N.
