Personal Democracy Forum 2008

awesome session and I'm just popping in...

Calacanis:
- Digg, Facebook, YouTube all and more have been coopted and ruined by marketers. Cat & mouse game to stay ahead - it's an arms chase

Peretti:
talking about creating content for the "Bored-at-Work Network" - BNW. excellent.
- Tips to going viral. Having a social imperative (reason to share with other people) is more important than good content
- make something funny and easy to understand appeal to bored office workers
- sub-viral growth is possible with big seeds; i.e. Obama emails get small 2ndary distribution but go out to huge list (via twitter).
- Describes the Mullet strategy - thin in the front, big in the back
- hardcore social activists important, but not needed to be at the root of a viral artifact

Sean Parker:
- For new customers, how many others do they propogate to? That is viral exponent and matters greatly. Conversion rate
- Napster, not viral, but WOM. Plaxo, purely viral. Facebook, not viral. Causes, pure viral
