Personal Democracy Forum 2008
Note by Salim Ismailsalim:
Opening question from Andrew: what would you on week 1 if you were president?
- Vint: get rid of the FCC
- Claudio: force all the senior cabinet to take a course on digital media...
(some others I didn't quite catch)
Alec: internet for everyone might help lead gov't, but isn't necessarily dependent on gov't
Vint: with the rise of mobiles, computers will be overtaken. Also, the Google queries coming from mobile are largely location-specific (v. interesting!)
Josh Silver: is the internet policy for the consumer or for the large telcos?
Vint: you have to create behaviours in them (the large telcos) to align them with consumers
Vint: we used to allocate spectrum in chunks for interference. Gov't should provide last mile. We don't have several roads going to the same place.
Erick: I thought we needed more competition... (ha, a rebuttal)
pause in note-taking while I ask a question...
Vint: there's a lot of non-english content out there. The number of chinese online exceeds that of the U.S.
Question: there'll be 100billion devices on the net. Implications?
Vint: it'll enable control...
Erick: most people don't think of the internet as a gov't issue. Does it want to be free?
Q: what should the goal of tech policy be?
Erick: see poll on TC (interesting results: top answer: net neutrality). Could you crowdsource gov't?
Discussion about piracy vs peeracy... Vint: you don't want p2p that closely linked with piracy
