Personal Democracy Forum 2008
Note by Ms, Kathy Gill:
Robin
collaborative production
image: glass of water
it's not half-full or half-empty - wrong question
it's how much water do you want and how much do you need
scarcity/abundance
aging infrastructure - must upgrade & build new infrastructure
financial burden based on 1993 gas tax
congestion
global warming
overextended consumers
rising fossil fuel costs
pressure -> crisis
abundance is when benefits are greater than costs
we look at costs from wrong perspective
cut costs in old-fashioned way
costs born alone
however benefits may be larger, shared
we feel in a state of scaracity as a result
"abundance" you pay exactly what you need
ZipCar
goLoco
200,000 people sharing 5,000 cars taking 5,000 parking spaces
US Dept of Transportation
user fees by the mile based on engine type
congestion pricing going into this
single purpose wired device in your car that does one thing
let's multiple this and make it open
how can we build mobile internet on the back of this infrastructure?
enable locational privacy
and security
national wireless system on the backs of cars
let's create platform architected on abundance
so that we need "less stuff"
Van Jones
Opening line:
I usually have "the ppt that al gore would do if he were black"
news today:
father of global warming thinks we may be at tipping point
recites katrina, california fires (migrant workers died because gov't called people on cellphones to tell them to leave)
"scariest channel on TV is the weather channel"
description of state of economy
last time we had D pres, D Congress & stagflation — was Jimmy Carter.
how to grow the economy without baking the planet?
weatherize millions of buildings all across this county to beat global warming
we have to put up solar panels
thousands of contracts; millions of jobs
(green collar workers ... caulk guns and hard hats)
plant millions of trees
put detroit back to work putting together wind turbines
WWWII level program (his analogy - I was thinking FDR)
what's standing in the way?
all the people who could create that future don't know each other. no way to talk to each other. community college president doesn't know how to talk to the solar panel producers.
all the parts are there to save the world. save the economy.
challenge to audience to figure out how to help
we cannot drill and burn our way out of these problems
