Personal Democracy Forum 2008
Note by Mr. John Breyault:
-Elizabeth Edwards-
Notes NYT – Bowling 1, News 0 article – Did MSM do its job in covering media and important issues of election
Women paid a price for blogging in support of Hillary Clinton
If the discussion on the Internet does not take place, you’ll continue to see politicians who are skittish about being online
Bloggers should be more appreciative that politicians are at least making an effort online, even if they are only taking baby steps
Q Rasiej: Could you comment on obama’s decision to opt out of the public financing system?
A Edwards: He’s already proven his appeal to the grassroots. He’s needed to prove that he’s a candidate of change. Opting out of the public financing system will enable Dems to turn some red states blue
Q Rasiej: Do you think that Barack’s campaign is proving that big-money donors can be taken out of politics or will they live with small-money donors?
A Edwards: I think it will be a combination. You need some early money to start grassroots campaigns and those come from big money donors.
Q Rasiej: Will you endorse Obama now that John Edwards has? What advice would you give Obama’s campaign if you were in his campaign every day?
A Edwards: Will work as hard as she can to help elect Obama. We can expect a lot of incoming from McCain, people affiliated w/the campaign, and people not affiliated w/the campaign. Notes imflammatory e-mails re: Obama being circulated. We need to assume every day that we are 15 points behind. Need to have more informal conversations w/people talking about his community activism stories.
Q: Any opportunity for you to focus on what still needs to be done in New Orleans going forward?
A: Yes. The American public is not aware of how little of the total job is left to be done in New Orleans
Q Rasiej: What will you do re: blogging, etc. in the future
A Edwards: Will be participating in the “Wonk Room” – policy blog on Center for American Progress
Q: How do people who are trying to put food on the table in tough economic times find time to get active in the political process
A: Politicians need to do a better job of coming to the people who are most affected by government policy
Q: How do you respond to those who say that political bloggers are operating in an echo chamber.
Q to Edwards: How has Internet made a difference to the presidential race
A John Edwards: Already "The Internet has given a huge fundraising advantage to Obama vs McCain
