Doug Rushkoff. Personal democracy is an oxymoron. Individualism. After the Renaissance people became hearers, not writers. Metaphor of program in the culture. Writing is fun, the real task is to participate in programming. Opportunity is not to become part of the Obama administration. People we put in office are there to create the conditions for our particpation in the process. Participatory democracy.
Morley Winograd. We are standing in the cusp of history. A civic generation comes along every 80 years. The generation is millenials. 40m eligible to vote in this election. Last time was the GI generation. Not about the computer technology it is communication technology. Theory of generational archetypes. Boomers were an idealist generation (cultural wars). Idealist gens (gen X) are followed by a recessive generation, focus on family and friends. Debates like evolution disappear in favor of debates about economic conditions and foreign policy. Civic generations are highly tolerant on social issues.
