Session: DigitalICS: Mobile Data Collection for Rural Cooperatives
Description
The liberalization of domestic marketing systems and globalization has left smallholders in the developing world with many challenges to overcome. They have opportunities to sell their produce in new high-value markets for specialty produce including certifications such as "Organic" and "Fair Trade." However stringent quality standards high transaction costs and limited scale and acquiring power create significant challenges for smallholders to access these markets.
A mobile-phone based application called DigitalICS (Internal Control System) has been designed, developed, evaluated and successfully deployed at CEPCO a coffee cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. The system is used to inspect and evaluate 50% of the cooperative members (more then 1 000 farmers). We'll demonstrate DigitalICS and its functionality and technological innovation.
