Session: Mobiles in Rural Development and Agriculture Livelihoods
Description
There is a lot of discussion in the ICT4D world about the impact of mobile phones into the lives of farmers especially rural small scale farmers in Africa. Most programmes focus on issues of access to market prices but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
This workshop will feature practical initiatives delivering useful agricultural information to farming communities. Challenges and opportunities of the various initiatives will be discussed.
We'll be looking Tradenet, currently in 12 countries, and at how a flexible web-based market information platform can be used to create customized mobile delivery alerts to farmers and traders worldwide. We'll also explore current research on mobile platforms for Kenyan farmers, and ethnographic research into how Bangladeshi farmers use
mobile 'phones.
