Oil palm biomass is the residue of oil palm and is environmental friendly, sustainable, renewable and is available throughout the year. Palm oil is only 10% of the whole oil palm tree, and an oil palm plantation produces about 55 tones per hectare per year of dry biomass.

In Malaysia, commercialization of oil palm biomass in the wood-based panel products industry have supplemented rubber wood as a raw material for products such as plywood, blackboard, particle board and medium density fiberboard. Based on the current research findings, oil palm industry will develop to a stage where there are many thriving industries founded upon oil palm biomass, instead of relying solely on palm oil as the only product of the plantation. If the oil palm biomass could be upgraded from a mere by-product to a valuable co-product of equivalent standing to palm oil, the oil palm industry will then become an industry generating virtually zero waste.
