In recent decades the development of archaeology has created a
growing interest in experimental methodology as a way to validate
hypotheses put forward by the discipline about the formation of
archeological recording, the technology of the past and its ways of life.
Making archeological experiments should be a habitual protocol for a
historical science where this type of practice had not been usual. In
this sense, experimental archaeology has had a very unequal development.
In consequence, we find today countries with an extensive methodological
experience with others that are just beginning to develop it.
In the Iberian Peninsula this development has been accelerated thanks
to two main events: in the first place, the first Congress of Experimental
Archaeology, held in Santander (Spain), in 2005; secondly, the creation
of the Spanish Association of Experimental Archaeology (Experimenta),
founded by researchers from different institutions. This Association,
co-organizer of the present congress, seeks to publicize and potentialize
research works using experimental methodology.
