On 30 June 2008, at UWI, Mona campus in Jamaica, the UWI will launch its inaugural session of the Caribbean Language and Linguistics Institute (CLLI). CLLI is a biennial four-week institute whose 2008 thematic focus is Endangered and Living Caribbean Languages. The programme features intensive exposure to linguistics, to the structure and usage of four vernacular Caribbean languages, and to fieldwork and theoretical linguistics training.
In seeking to promote Caribbean Linguistics locally and around the world, the UWI has organised the Institute in conjunction with the Society for Caribbean Linguistics (SCL). The Institute brings UWI students, along with students from other regional and international institutions, into a learning environment which will involve a concentration of the finest scholars and specialists from within the region and abroad. Teaching staff will include renowned Caribbean linguist, Mervyn Alleyne, as well as well-known leaders in Caribbean linguistics such as Lawrence Carrington, Hubert Devonish, Marta Dijkhoff, Nicholas Faraclas, John Rickford and Ian Robertson. Convenors of the specialist workshops include Lars Hinrichs, Shelome Gooden and Marlyse Baptista.
