Workplace health and safety is an important issue but this is especially true for those in the energy industry. Companies are now placing more rigorous emphasis on health and safety. Added to this has been the introduction of more stringent regulations such as those issued by the US Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This clearly indicates that the energy industry realizes the increasing need for effective and efficient management of health and safety issues. Even though companies have sought to improve health and safety, the US Labor Department reported that 5703 workers died in workplace accidents in 2006. Health and safety therefore remains a top priority but this is often not maintained throughout the organization. Involvement of all employees, commitment from management and the development of a total safety culture are some of the major issues, which must be addressed in order to improve health and safety standards in the energy industry.
