Water is crucial to the existence of life on Earth as well as being the medium for a vast array of chemical and physical applications. The apparent simplicity of the water molecule belies its complexity as a solid, liquid or gas. Characterizing, understanding and predicting its properties, both as a pure substance and as a component of more complex systems, form vibrant and often controversial channels of research, with new experimental and theoretical approaches appearing all the time. These often bring surprising information to the debate. For example there is an ongoing and vigorous exchange about the mechanism for proton transport in water. Another recent study has claimed water is chain-like rather than network-like. While many researchers disagree with this assertion, disproving it has proved tougher than people first thought.
