Welcome to the 5th International Conference on Semiconductor Quantum Dots (QD2008) in Gyeongju, Korea, from May 11th to 16th, 2008. QD2008 is the 5th conference in a series in Munich (2000), Tokyo (2002), Banff (2004), and Chamonix-Mont Blanc (2006). Gyeongju, the capital of Shilla Kingdom (BC 57~AD935) for almost a thousand years, was designated as one of World Cultural Heritage sites by UNESCO in 1995, and the whole city is truly a “Museum without Walls”. We sincerely hope that everyone come and enjoy the stay at Gyeongju. The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for scientists from different research branches including physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering to discuss fabrication techniques, optical and transport properties as well as applications of quantum dots. One of the main goals of the conference is to bring together different quantum dot communities involved in research on self-assembled dots, nano-crystals, and gated structures, in order to stimulate progress by combining the expertise developed in each community.
