ANZCA is the peak professional body for communication, mass communication, public relations, and journalism educators in Australasia, and the annual conference is always a lively opportunity to explore and debate new research directions in communication.
The theme in 2008 is Power and Place, with a particular emphasis on politics given the location in Wellington, the political capital of Aotearoa New Zealand. There is also the flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of perspectives on communication, place, and power. See our call for papers, left, for inspiration, or just surprise us with your take on the issues!
We are very excited to announce three confirmed keynote speakers, all leading names in communication and all with strong aspects of their work focusing on exposing and analysing the machinations of power. Professor Maxwell McCombs is of course famous for his development of agenda setting theory, still one of the most influential theories of media effects, while Professor Jennifer Craik has an international reputation in cultural and media theory, including globally cited work on the cultural power of fashion. New Zealand's own Nicky Hager has changed the face of politics in this country through his investigative journalism work, and continues to hold politicians and public relations operators from all sectors of the political spectrum to account in his best-selling books. We are very excited that, while all three speakers address the fundamental issues of this conference (power, place, communication, and culture) we will be able to enjoy such a diversity of perspectives (USA, Australia, and New Zealand) and methods (quantitative, qualitative, critical, and practical) across the range of their expertise. Please see more detail on each speaker at the Keynote Speakers link at left.
