The components of a good hydraulic design require anticipating transient responses. Therefore the design must use the best available simulation techniques and build into the solution, quality, efficient monitoring and proven controlling procedures.

Predicting surge analysis can often be difficult, involving detailed computer modelling in attempts to simulate the complex interactions of equipment, pipelines and fluids during normal, fault and emergency events. Whilst issues of pump and pipe sizing are important, the interactions between system components can frequently be more challenging to a hydraulic designer.

Whilst there are numerous standards that refer to valves, pipelines and equipment, surge analysis is still not subject to codes of practice. Consequently, the design constraints must be based on knowledge and experience. A number of validated software programmes are available, but the problem for a hydraulic engineer can often be to identify the most appropriate software tool for their particular application. The onus is also upon the designer not just to present results, but to use their expertise to interpret the analysis and guide the constructors and operators to an understanding of the optimum operating conditions.

Do we get seduced by coloured simulations and forget the numbers and uncertainties?
